Engineers and Scientists Celebrates their 10th Anniversary
of their Society at the Annual Ball
The Annual Ball was a fitting occasion for the Society of Sri Lankan Engineers & Scientists in the UK (SSLES) to celebrate their 10th anniversary which was held at the Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel with Deputy Sri Lankan High Commissioner, Mr Sugheeshwara Gunaratne and Mrs Gunaratne as the Chief Guests.

After a brief welcome drink of bubbly and fruit juice, the President Vithanage Dhanaratne (Dhane) and Mrs Mala Dhanaratne formally received the guests with all ladies receiving a red rose from the President and all the gents receiving a DIY kit sponsored by the international firm Rawlplug. After a sumptuous three course meal, the president was introduced by the vice president, Asiri Bamunuarachchi, who delivered a very short and effective welcome address followed by a short speech by the chief guest Mr Gunaratne. The President opened the dance floor with a waltz with his first lady to be joined by the guests.

The Breeze with Denzil and Suresh provided the music for the evening and kept all guests on the floor with their repertoire of scintillating numbers except during short breaks when the Entry Draw and Raffle Draws were held. They were supplemented by DJ Hashan Dias, who himself is an engineer, playing current popular music. The draws were conducted by the president and the vice president. The quiz competition organised by the president and sponsored by Rawlplug was a novelty item which was well participated and enjoyed by all.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary, the President invited all the founder members, Keerthi Devendra, Past patron Deputy High Commissioner, and Champika Silva who represented recently joined members to cut a beautifully decorated cake with the SSLES Logo. Thoughout the evening a slide show of pictures showed the highlights of SSLES over the past ten years.

Dr Sunil Abeysuriya and Dr (Mrs) Sirima Abeysuriya received special gifts for attending all Annual Balls organised by the SSLES which was presented by the President. Martin Edgar and Miu Hung were chosen as the couple of the evening. Vice patron Leslie Gunaratne presented Mala Dhanaratne and Melanie Dhanaratne with orchids for their role in this very successful event. General Secretary of the SSLES, Gerald Alwis, proposed the Vote of Thanks. He thanked all the guests, the hotel staff, the band, the DJ, committee and members, advertisers and Mala and Melanie Dhanaratne. He paid a special tribute to the President for being the chief organiser of the event. Photographs By Nath Cooray, Denis Makavita and Champika Silva.

It was past 1.30am the following day when the evening was brought to a close with singing of national anthems. Satisfied guests reluctantly left with the consolation that they have to wait only until 15th September 2018 for the next SSLES Ball.
