10TH CHARITY SUMMER SOCIAL OF THE
ASSOCIATION OF SRI LANKAN MUSLIMS (ASLAM), READING UK
ASLAM, a registered charity based in Reading UK, which provides a forum for those in and around Reading of Sri Lankan origin to interact and keep in touch with the traditions of their motherland, organized the historic 10th Annual charity Summer Social on 24th June 2018 at the Woodford park, Woodley in Reading. Hundreds of Sri Lankans of all nationalities and their families as well as many families from the wider community too, came to this event, which offered everyone of all age groups, a fun filled and enjoyable day, in a traditional Sri Lankan setting. The chief Guest was HE Sugeewswara Gunaratna, the Acting High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in UK, who awarded prizes to the winners.Many other distinguished guests were also present.

The day started with a BBC interview where Lukman Harees, the Patron of ASLAM was interviewed at the usual Sunday Breakfast show hosted by popular radio presenter Phil Kennedy, about ASLAM - a decade in community service as well as about the Summer Social. The day's event included many Tournaments-a 7 aside Cricket, football, badminton, carrom as well as obstacle races, many traditional Sri Lankan track and field events and interesting events for kids too. A colourful souvenir was released to mark this landmark event, which included congratulatory messages from local civic bodies and also other Sri Lankan organizations in UK. Proceeds will go towards charitable projects both in Sri Lanka and UK.

ASLAM, has been involved in many charitable projects specially in war affected areas and during times of calamity in Sri Lanka, helping to rebuild damaged school libraries, laboratories, and donating school furniture,books and equipment. ASLAM has also been helping the local hospital specially the Children's Ward at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading. Helping a cancer affected Sri Lankan in UK, a blood donation campaign and a donation of wheelchairs and equipment to the Orthopedic Ward of this hospital was also specially arranged to celebrate a decade in community service.
